Course description

Israel faces the gravest challenge to its democracy yet. Why is this, and can Israel remain both Jewish and democratic? Holding no crystal ball, this summer course searches for answers by understanding the factual, moral, and emotional matrix of Israeli society and politics, from its foundation to-date. We will examine these through both structural and personal lenses, looking at the underpinning processes as well as at leading figures, shaping the trajectory of this troubled and fascinating country. We will pay special attention to existential politics: the politics of identities, fear, resentment, and legitimation regarding the Jewish state's existence. We shall discover that by living on the edge, Israel can shed valuable insight on worldwide achievements, problems, and remedies. Israel may, after all, be the world's crystal ball.
