Course description

The new Science Communication course at Shoals Marine Lab (Isles of Shoals, ME) will help students develop a wide range of communication skills for engaging both scientific and non-scientific audiences. Students will interact with and document the research of other students, faculty and marine scientists working at Shoals. They will also have the opportunity to engage with local watermen and natural resource managers to learn about the challenges facing the Gulf of Maine fishery, and how to balance conservation of these resources with economic development in the region. This course will introduce students to video production, podcasts, Wikipedia editing, public science events, social media platforms, blogging, and writing press releases. They will receive feedback from their peers and the instructors with the goal of helping all members of the class to become effective science communicators.
