This course is only offered in the Summer Session.
This course explores the breadth of music in Asia, with a focus on East Asia (China, Japan, and Korea) and Indonesia. Hands-on instruction in gamelan (Indonesia's most prominent form of traditional music) and workshops in selected aspects of traditional East Asian musics build on a systematic introduction to fundamental musical concepts, providing a direct engagement with music making. Through critical reading and listening, written assignments, and discussion, we examine the full range of music found within and coming out of contemporary East Asia, including adaptations of Western musics and the latest popular styles. The course thus approaches music both as it is practiced, and as a lens for examining the myriad social and cultural forces that shape it, and that are shaped by it.
