As a part of Cornell's designation as New York State's land-grant university, it’s responsible for providing military training and education programs to not only Cornell students, but to students at nearby universities. Cornell established a Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) unit in 1917 and has since offered the program to students from schools such as SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Cortland, Elmira College, and Ithaca College. Enrolled though Cornell SCE, these “crosstown cadets” come to Cornell at least once a week during the spring and fall semesters to take military science courses and participate in leadership labs. Here, Alexandra Marriott, a SUNY Cortland senior, explains what it’s like to participate in Army ROTC at Cornell as a part-time student.
