Cornell's free summer events begin June 27

School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, May 26, 2017

Cornell University's School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions invites you to expand your horizons and continue your education in one of the most enjoyable ways possible—by attending our free summer concerts and lectures!

Running from June 27 to August 4, the free summer events series features:

Tuesday performances at the Schwartz Center begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are required and will be available in the lobby (limit four per person) starting at 6:00 p.m. on the day of the performance. This year's shows include:

  • June 27: Savoyards Ithaca presents The Sorcerer—A love potion produces unlikely romantic pairings
  • July 11: Joe Crookston—Songs of small towns, rattlesnake tails, Taoist parables, and drunk roosters
  • July 18: Falling Waters Sampler—Traditional fiddle tunes in a range of styles
  • July 25: Dance concert: Galumpha—Stunning acrobatics, inventive choreography, and more than a little silliness
  • August 1: Stanley Chepaitis: The Jazz–Baroque Project—Jazz compositions inspired by works of Telemann and Bach

Wednesday lectures take place at Call Auditorium in Kennedy Hall at 7:00 p.m. and usually run about an hour, followed by a question-and-answer period. This year's lectures include:

  • July 5: Glenn Altschuler, "'The Future Belongs to Those Who Tell the Best Stories': Advocacy Techniques in Great American Trials"
  • July 12: Diane Ackerman, "Everyday Heroism and The Zookeeper's Wife"
  • July 19: Jonathan Lunine, "The Big Bang Theory and the Priest Who Fathered It"
  • July 26: Robert Morgan, "Chasing the North Star"

Friday concerts take place on the Cornell Arts Quad from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Bring your kids, friends, picnics, and frisbees! If the weather is particularly inclement, we'll move indoors to the Rhodes–Rawlings Auditorium in Klarman Hall. This year's concerts include:

  • June 30: Stone Cold Miracle—Soul music with deep grooves, funky beats, and gospel-inspired vocals
  • July 7: The Destination—Cornell Summer Session's 125th anniversary party! Eat cake and celebrate a Summer Session milestone with one of the region's premier dance bands
  • July 14: Diana Leigh and the Savoy Stompers—Hot vocals and cool alto sax
  • July 21: The Pelotones—Swing, jazz, R&B, and rock-and-roll covers and originals
  • July 28: Not From Wisconsin—Pop music with a serious edge
  • August 4: Annie and the Hedonists—Acoustic blues, vintage jazz, and roots Americana
