“Energy: A Human History” originated in a graph prepared 40 years ago by Cesare Marchetti, a physicist, for the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis. Marchetti’s “simple and predictive model for energy markets” demonstrated that a new energy source takes about 40-50 years to reach a 10 percent market share and a century to occupy half the market.
